The Hospitality & Catering Divison have a large bank of willing, multi-skilled flexible Local and Foreign National Catering workers, this is good news for local employers. A common problem facing many employers is recruitment, 14% of hospitality businesses in Northern Ireland are reporting vacancies and 7% report having ‘hard to fill’ vacancies – much higher than that reported across all industries as a whole.
According to People 1st, The sector Skills Council for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries, skills shortage vacancies are most likely to arise for managerial and chef positions. There are 5,300 chefs in Northern Ireland, 1200 of whom have no qualifications and only 1,150 hold equivalent of a basic food hygiene certificate. The lack of skilled chefs is frequently mentioned by employers as a barrier to effective business performance. In addition, the diversity of the restaurant industry has resulted in new skills needs such as knowledge of different international cuisines and an awareness of new and emerging cuisines. Both these trends are arguably further increasing the demand for appropriately skilled and qualified chefs.
